Farm to Table
From a simple meal to gathering around the table, food is more than just nourishment. It's about family and friends, making memories, and a chance to connect over food grown by a local family farm.
Take a peak to see how easy it is to prepare one of our Delaware Grown recipes.
We are on the go with work, school, and kids activities, its nice to sit down at the table to connect over a home cooked meal.
Eating fresh doesn't have to be difficult
After trying to grow fruits and veggies in my small backyard garden, I quickly realized I do not have a green thumb, and that I was missing out on all the in-season favorites. I decided the next year I would leave it to the pros. I joined a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at a farm here in Delaware. I remember picking up my first spring CSA box. I joined the pick-up line and when it was my turn, the farm staff greeted me with a smile and explained all that was in the weekly share. I also got to select a few pieces of fruit that didn't fit inside. That box was heavy and it was completely packed with produce. I couldn't wait to get home and start eating all that was in there.
Boy was I overwhelmed unpacking my first CSA box. There was a ton of food, more than I had ever gotten in the grocery store for the same amount of money. Of course I knew what to do with strawberries, honey, tomatoes, spinach and lettuce. But I had no clue what to do with collard greens, asparagus (I only ever ate it out of a can, and that wasn't tasty), radishes, rhubarb, leeks, and swiss chard. I had to learn quickly because in another seven days I would be back in line to pick up my next share.
I spent a lot of time in the kitchen that summer figuring out how to prepare fruits and vegetables I had never experienced before. What came out of the kitchen were a treasure of new recipes that I tinkered with until I got it just right. I had four main goals - not a lot of ingredients, nutritious, didn't take a lot of time to prepare, and my family of four had to completely empty their plates.
No need to worry about joining a CSA or picking up a new fruit or vegetable at the local farmers' market, because we have you covered. All those recipes that I worked on are now on the Delaware Grown website for you to enjoy. In addition, you can find out how to handle and store all the produce in your box so it stays fresh. Enjoy!

A Note from the Secretary of Agriculture
Farm to table is more than just buying your food locally. It's an understanding that your food did not start its journey to your table at the grocery store. It's also a celebration of our agricultural history and the enjoyment of the great food you prepared for you and your loved ones.
Take the opportunity to stop off at a local farmers' market or on-farm market where there is a variety of fruits and vegetables in-season. This is an opportunity to connect with Delaware family farmers that take pride in growing the freshest produce. Many of our farms also offer community supported agriculture programs where you can purchase a share and get a weekly box of produce, honey, and more. There is nothing like getting sweet corn or a peach that was just picked first thing that morning and is in your hand to eat a few hours later.
If you can't make it to the farm or the farmers' market, look for Delaware Grown in your local grocery's produce aisle. You might be surprised to find out that almost every lima bean in the frozen aisle was grown right here in Delaware
I want to thank you for supporting Delaware's family farms. More than ninety-nine percent of Delaware's 2,300 farms are family-owned. Our farmers produce a variety of agricultural products on 525,000 acres of farmland, including fruits and vegetables, corn, soybeans, poultry, and livestock. At the end of a hard day's work when Delaware farmers sit down to eat with their own family, they take pride in knowing that they helped feed thousands of families, just like yours, up and down the Eastern seaboard.
I hope you enjoy a piece of Delaware tradition, just as my family and I thoroughly enjoy the bounty our farm families provide.
